Pixel X-Rays

As a fan of any pixel art, I thought this was a wonderful combination of technology and… well… technology through the use of an x-ray and the pixels of the internal organs. Color gradients can be so expressive, even within the form of a pixel, and within the black and white background of the x-ray they come across as all the more striking and fascinating.

The typeface produced by Lo Siento was fascinating in its incorporation of an organic look with something as utilitarian as typeface. I love the handmade look the final product has and the images of its construction are beautifully intricate. While I believe something of this look would have to be very purposeful in its use, it certainly is a testament to the handmade process that is being used less and less in typography.

Alain Guerra e Neraldo de la Paz
This is a fascinating art piece made entirely out of clothing! Having studied the impact of explosives on Japan specifically in my Japanese film class, I think it’s interesting to take a very day-to-day thing like clothing and incorporate it in so startling of a way. The realism is incredible and I feel the vibrancy of the colors make it all the more impressive. In this case the material of the piece gives it a different feeling because it is clothing and not a traditional art supply like paper etc. Fascinating work!

This design reminded me of a presentation we had in class a couple of weeks ago that explored whether or not infographics and posters had any sway in how we perceived consumerism. I really enjoyed how this poster was colorful without being offputting, and very much combined the two key elements (coffee and the city) in a friendly manner, appropriate for the event at hand. Done differently, I think it’s very possible that done differently its message would not be quite as effective. So all in all, a good example of information mapped out in a visually pleasing and creative way!

I have not had a chance to blog in a while, but I did recently see an amazing exhibit at LACMA called “In Wonderland: The Surrealist Adventures of Women Artists in Mexico and the United States.” One of the most striking pieces I saw was the one posted above by Rosa Rolando titled “Self Portrait.” The exhibit was curated amazingly well and considering the amount of work they had, it did not seem cluttered and the set up very much fit the theme without being over the top. I appreciated the emphasis the exhibit gave to lesser known artists like Rolando because I feel it could have easily turned into a Frida show, as she is the first artist many people jump to when they think “surreal.” Either way, the show was a fantastic survey into surrealist art and certainly one of the best shows I’ve seen at LACMA.

I thought this was a really fascinating installation not only because of the subject matter but also the space. The clean, white room has a very typical modern vibe of sterility and the placement of organic material within that space really changes the floor and the supposed ceiling of the lower floor. I think this piece could begin an interesting conversation on how the space impacts the installment of a piece almost as much as the piece itself. Presentation plays an important role in perception of an artist’s work.

Brendan Austin
It seems that recently industrial photography has been popping up everywhere. I visited Pomona College’s “It Happened At Pomona: Part 3” which featured a pretty large collection of photos by Lewis Baltz. When I was first introduced to his work, I can’t say that I liked it, but perhaps that can be attributed to being raised in California in a very industrial part and just seeing that sort of architecture all the time desensitized me from any sort of beauty it may have. This photo by Brendan Austin reminded me of Baltz’s work in a way I could really appreciate. I like the idea of blending different environments within the same space, and I’m glad that I’ve come to appreciate a totally different type of work.

Some very clever Oreo ads commemorating their 100th anniversary. Kind of fun when products incorporate history, I didn’t realize they had been around for that long! Rarely do I see fun advertising from a major corporation but this struck me as a really great idea, especially love the lunar footprint it connects nicely with my project!

Another beautiful example of super cute marketing, posted by Japanese Trademarks. I wish this image were higher res but still, very simple lines and good colors to advertise potatoes! I’d buy them. :)

I saw Timothy H. Brown on my tumblr dashboard but then searched his account on flickr and really enjoyed his work. Though this is one of his few photos in black and white, he takes a lot of photos of cargo, everything from computers to less technical things, all neatly organized and lending that mass consumerism vibe. This photo in particular jumped out at me, perhaps because of its resemblance to Bas Jan Ader’s ‘falling’ series. The slight out of focus quality and gradation in the lighting makes me think this is underwater though I’m not quite sure. Anyways, interesting work and a good example of yet another person making good use of their camera!
